Position Overview

Steer PR is seeking a full-time associate with familiarity and interest in national security, public policy, public affairs, creative storytelling, and digital communications. Responsibilities include conducting insightful research, scheduling and other administrative tasks, issue tracking, writing and editing, developing media lists, and monitoring media for clients on a broad portfolio of reputation and brand issues.

While we practice flexible work schedules, candidates must be available to be in-person in our Washington, DC office.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning and coordination of client meetings and deliverables. Prepare agendas and materials for client interactions including developing meeting summaries, tracking action items, and assisting in execution.

  • Research, analyze, and write materials relevant to client priorities such as talking points, policy summaries, one-pagers, and memos.

  • Monitor select hearings and other key Congressional and stakeholder engagements. Develop and prepare summaries relevant to client needs.

  • Actively track and strategically circulate relevant media coverage to clients. Use tools such as Muck Rack, Cision, etc., to develop targeted media lists.

  • Support multiple client teams with complex and fast-moving projects and tasks.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Qualities:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in communications, political science, public policy, or a related field

  • Prior experience working or interning on Capitol Hill, in the national security community, or on a public affairs team is preferred

  • Strong research and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and analyze complex national security policy issues

  • Eagerness to learn and energetically play an important role on the Steer team and in the national security space

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong self-motivation and effective problem-solving to resolve routine client questions and critical thinking skills to anticipate client needs

  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to multitask in high-pressure situations

  • Work ethically and with integrity, including maintaining client and firm confidentiality.

  • Proficient in social media platforms, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace
