Position Overview:
Steer PR is seeking a full-time Director to join our growing team. The ideal candidate is a seasoned communications strategist with a deep understanding of national security, defense, foreign policy, and technology—and a passion for helping clients navigate today’s rapidly evolving geopolitical and media landscapes.
As a Director, you will lead client accounts, develop and execute high-impact communications strategies, and serve as a trusted advisor to our team. You will be responsible for crafting compelling narratives, building media relationships, managing high-performing teams, and identifying opportunities for innovation and growth—both for our clients and for the firm.
Candidates must be available for regular in-person collaboration at our Arlington office.
Key Responsibilities:
Manage client relationships and provide strategic counsel that aligns communications strategy with policy and business objectives.
Develop and oversee integrated communications plans, including media engagement, message development, thought leadership, digital strategy, and stakeholder engagement.
Craft clear, persuasive, and impactful messaging that advances client priorities across traditional and emerging platforms.
Build and leverage relationships with key journalists and outlets to secure earned media opportunities and guide client positioning.
Lead, coach, and develop junior team members, fostering a culture of collaboration, excellence, and innovation.
Partner with Steer leadership on business development efforts, including new business proposals, strategic partnerships, and agency expansion initiatives.
Track trends in policy, public opinion, and the information environment to anticipate reputational risks and opportunities.
Uphold and enhance the firm’s reputation and brand through high-quality client service and external engagement.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in communications, political science, international affairs, or a related field.
5+ years of experience in strategic communications, public relations, or public affairs, ideally with a focus on national security, intelligence, defense, or technology.
Demonstrated experience leading accounts, managing teams, and delivering measurable communications outcomes.
Strong understanding of geopolitics, defense, and national security policy; ability to translate complex issues into clear, persuasive messaging.
Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills across media, policy, and digital platforms.
Proven ability to work effectively under pressure, prioritize competing demands, and manage fast-moving projects with precision and poise.
Established media relationships and experience in proactive media engagement are strongly preferred.
Experience in digital advertising or integrated campaign management is a plus.
Proficiency in social media platforms, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Canva, and media monitoring tools such as Muck Rack.
