BLUF: Deep Sea Drones

In a first for the Ukrainian armed forces, an underwater drone successfully struck a Russian submarine while it was docked in port, inflicting critical damage. The operation and its aftermath, captured by satellite imagery from Vantor, underscores both Ukraine’s growing mastery of unmanned warfare and the rapid maturation of its defense industrial base.

Unmanned systems – such as the Sea Baby drone used in the strike against the Russian naval facility at Novorossiysk – demonstrate how relatively inexpensive platforms can take down the world’s most complex and costly weapons.

A Kilo-class submarine, with an estimated price tag of roughly $400 million, is no longer insulated by its sophistication or by the presumed safety of heavily defended ports. As a result, Russia has been forced to reconsider how it deploys its Black Sea Fleet, with even its most distant strongholds now vulnerable.

As the United States and adversaries such as China race to develop their own unmanned underwater capabilities, with Beijing investing heavily in this domain, Ukraine’s experience offers more than a tactical lesson.

Just as FPV drones have transformed ground combat, this strike may herald a new era in maritime warfare—one in which unmanned systems increasingly shape the balance of power at sea.
