BLUF: Dude 44 Bravo

Racing against the clock, with Iranian forces closing in, an American airman was rescued behind enemy lines in Iran last weekend in a stunning feat of bravery, coordination, and ingenuity by our Armed Services.

You have probably read the reported details: hundreds of troops deployed deep inside Iranian territory, a forward base constructed on a remote Iranian farm, and the use of previously undisclosed technologies that enabled American operators to safely extract the downed airman. You have also likely heard about the reported cost: millions in equipment lost, including two C-130 transport planes, two Black Hawks, and an A-10 Warthog – all to bring one American home.

Many commentators, particularly foreign ones, quickly derided these losses as disproportionate and an unreasonable price to pay for rescuing a single life. Not only are these arguments cold and callous, but they fundamentally miss the point of American exceptionalism – and why our nation moves heaven and earth for one of its own.

We have said here in the BLUF time and again that what sets America apart is the men and women who choose to serve and sacrifice everything for this nation. That commitment from our all volunteer force – from those on the front lines of the battlefield to our law enforcement, firefighters, and beyond – is a strategic edge no adversary can match, and no budget can fully capture. The life of an American service member carries no price tag, and neither does the morale these operations generate across our force.

It's this intangible quality that almost certainly keeps our enemies awake at night. As retired Gen. Frank McKenzie, former CENTCOM commander, put it: “It takes a year to build an aircraft — and 200 years to build a military tradition where you don’t leave anybody behind.”

Contrast that with how our adversaries value their own people. The Russian military, for instance, uses the term "meat grinder" to describe its mass assault tactics, which have claimed hundreds of thousands of its soldiers’ lives since the invasion of Ukraine. It is this difference in values – not hardware, not headcount – that sets America apart and has sustained our enduring advantage for 250 years.
