BLUF: Dispatch From the Drone Wars

This week reminded us that the future of warfare with AI and autonomy is already here. In case you haven’t seen it, CENTCOM declassified footage of three Saronic Corsair unmanned surface vessels executing the first-ever American combat strike by sea drones in the Persian Gulf. The Corsairs sailed into Iran's Bandar Abbas Naval Base and destroyed a submarine maintenance facility without a single sailor in harm's way. The 25-second video says it all.

Almost simultaneously, Ukraine's Navy sank the Russian FSB patrol vessel Izumrud near Novorossiysk using a Sargan-3000 unmanned maritime system. This is the same Russian ship that participated in Moscow’s 2018 seizure of Ukrainian sailors in the Kerch Strait. "Retribution is inevitable. More to follow," the Ukrainian Navy posted. It hits differently for us when the instrument of retribution was a sea drone.

Two bodies of water, two conflicts, two platforms, one outcome. The real significance of these strikes lies beneath the surface. Autonomous navigation, AI-enabled mission planning, and human-machine teaming are compressing the time between sensing, deciding, and acting. Commanders are projecting more force, across greater distances, with fewer of our own troops at risk and dramatically lower costs.

Now we know none of this is new to regular BLUFers. But that's the point — the pace isn't slowing; it's accelerating. As far as we can tell, the Corsair moved from ISR to rescue to combat strike inside a single three-and-a-half month deployment. As the Pentagon CTO's office and the CDAO drive AI deeper into doctrine and acquisition, these platforms will only get smarter and more numerous.

Make no mistake, the nations that can field these weapons successfully at scale will define what military competition looks like for the next generation. This week wasn't a preview. It was a dispatch from a year of conflict that has already changed the face of warfare forever.
